How fee-free overdraft actually works, who qualifies, and what it won't cover.
SpotMe is the feature that lets Chime advertise "no overdraft fees" without just declining your card at the register. Here's the mechanics behind it.
SpotMe lets qualifying members overdraw their Chime Checking Account — spending slightly more than their available balance — without being charged a fee for it. Instead of your card getting declined at checkout, the purchase goes through and your balance simply goes negative by that amount, interest-free and fee-free.
Qualifying direct deposits mean payroll, government benefits, or similar recurring ACH payments — not manual transfers or peer-to-peer payments like Venmo.
Coverage typically starts around $20 for new qualifying members and can grow up to $200 or more over time. The exact ceiling depends on your account history, how frequently and how much you're direct-depositing, your spending activity, and other risk-based factors Chime evaluates internally. There's no published formula — the limit adjusts automatically and you'll see it reflected in the app.
SpotMe applies to debit card purchases and, depending on your limit, ATM withdrawals — but it does not cover ACH transfers, Pay Anyone transfers, or checks. If you're trying to avoid a returned ACH payment specifically, SpotMe won't be the safety net for that.
After using SpotMe, Chime shows an optional tip screen. It is genuinely optional — you're never required to tip to keep using the feature, and declining doesn't reduce your coverage or limit.
Common misconception: SpotMe is not a loan and doesn't affect your credit. It's simply permission to let your checking balance go temporarily negative without a fee — you just need to bring it back positive through your next deposit.
Once you've met the direct deposit requirement, go to Settings within the Chime app and enroll in SpotMe. It doesn't activate automatically the moment you qualify — you do need to opt in.
